For the last year or so, the UE has been going through some stylistic changes and on this last tour we were able to open the music up in a really satisfying way. This piece is representative of our attempt to illuminate or delineate certain things that are not accessible via typical strategies for free improvisation. We try - though we certainly don't always succeed - to find something in the hum, atmosphere, and tension of a performing space, and from there to enter it and, if appropriate, shape it. Ironically, we find that only by abstaining from pushing the sound around can we be surprised - which is, after all the reason to play with other people, to improvise at all.
